KERN UX Standard – The open design system for German public administration

KERN is a technology-independent, open UX standard for the design of digital public administration services, which is provided under an open source license at kern-ux.de. The reusable UI components, templates, and code modules enable more efficient development of user-centered and accessible online services, service portals, and specialized procedures – from the local to the federal level.

KERN is already in productive use and is being expanded by a growing community in line with demand. Through interoperability with libraries and in combination with service standards and umbrella brands, KERN contributes to comprehensible, accessible, and recognizable administrative services.

Features:

  • HTML/CSS-based, framework adapters (React, Angular, Vue, TYPO3, Blazor, Web Components, etc.)
  • Accessibility “by design” (WCAG, EN 301 549, BITV 2.0)
  • Supports §7 OZG 2.0, service standard, DIN SPEC 66336
  • Multi-theming for customizable adaptability (branding/corporate design)
  • D-Stack-compatible and AI-ready
  • Community with 600+ experts
